A great editorial photograph is rarely created by the photographer alone.
It comes from a process.
The concept. The model. Styling. Hair and makeup. Location. Light. Direction. Mood. Movement. And the atmosphere created by the team working together.
Each element matters — but knowing how to bring those elements together into one coherent image is what really makes an editorial work.
That is what Elevate is about.
Held at Desk & Studio in Sydney, this full-day workshop takes you inside the process of creating a fashion editorial from beginning to end.
Working with three professional editorial models, professional hair and makeup, styling, studio and natural-light environments, you will photograph four completely different creative concepts across the day.
Rather than simply arriving at a finished setup and taking photographs, you will see how each idea is developed and shaped.
Why this model?
Why this styling?
Why this light?
What does the location add?
How should the model be directed?
What needs to change when the idea isn’t quite working?
And most importantly — how do all these decisions come together in the final frame?
Four editorial worlds
Across the day we create four deliberately different visual stories:
Graphic Fashion Editorial
Strong studio fashion built around shape, silhouette, movement, styling and controlled light.
Natural-Light Fashion Story
A softer, more cinematic editorial using windows, texture, environment and available light.
Beauty Editorial
Closer, more refined photography focused on skin, hair, makeup, expression and precision lighting.
Avant-Garde Editorial
A more experimental final concept where styling, shape, light and composition can become darker, stranger and more unexpected.
The intention is not to give you four variations of the same photograph.
It is to show you how completely different images can emerge when the creative ingredients change.
Learn the process, not just the settings
Elevate is jointly mentored by Lyn Taylor and Avs Kumar.
Throughout the day, Lyn and Avs will develop the concepts, demonstrate lighting and creative decisions, direct the models and work alongside participants while you shoot.
You will explore how to:
- turn an idea into an editorial photograph
- choose lighting that supports the concept
- work with styling, hair and makeup
- direct models with purpose
- create stronger fashion compositions
- use studio and natural light creatively
- recognise when an image is working — and when it needs to change
- build variety without losing the visual story
This is not about memorising somebody else’s lighting diagram.
It is about understanding why creative decisions are made, how different people contribute to the production, and how the photographer stitches everything together.
The experience
Elevate is limited to 10 photographers, allowing genuine shooting time, interaction with the production and close mentoring throughout the day.
Lunch and coffee are included.
You should have a basic understanding of your camera and ideally be comfortable shooting in Manual Mode. Previous fashion or editorial photography experience is not required.
Bring your camera, charged batteries, memory cards and the lenses you normally enjoy using for portrait or fashion photography.
Come to photograph.
But more importantly, come to experience how an editorial is actually created.
Because editorial photography isn’t one person’s talent.
It is what happens when many talents, ideas and decisions converge — and someone knows how to bring them together.
